There are many wonderful styles to choose from for your wedding dance choreography! Generally I will choreograph from the music or song you chose and use the steps and moves which I feel fit that particular piece of music. I will take into consideration the introduction to the music, the verses and the choruses. as well as whether the music has a heavy beat or other musical instruments are emphasised. The list below are are some popular options but are more generalised. If your music corresponds to a particular popular dance routine then I will ask if you wish to do it in that style e.g. I recently choreographed to You Never Can Tell from Pulp Fiction using my own interpretation of dance moves. I have choreographed comedy dance routines to Bring Me Sunshine by Morecombe and Wise. I am currently making up a routine for Shut Up and Dance by Walk The Moon. For one adventurous couple they started lying on their backs on the floor as they wanted something more advanced in a Contemporary dance style. Creating a great wedding dance choreography, civic partnership dance involves several key fundamentals to ensure it’s memorable, enjoyable, and reflects your unique style as a couple. Here are some essential elements:

  1. Song Selection: Choose a song that is meaningful to both of you. It should reflect your relationship and the mood you want to set for your First Dance/Wedding Dance.
  2. Dance Style: Select a dance style that suits the song and your comfort level. Whether it’s a classic Waltz, a lively Salsa, a traditional dance routine, lively Salsa, a fun mash up or contemporary dance routine, the style should match your personalities and make you shine on your big day with all your friends and family watching at your wedding reception.
  3. Personalization: Incorporate moves that are special to you as a couple. This could include inside jokes, signature moves or elements that reflect your shared interests.
  4. Practice: Start practicing early with your fiance and allow ample time to learn and perfect the choreography. Regular practice helps build confidence and ensures smooth execution of the big day.
  5. Communication: Maintain open communication with your dance instructor. Discuss your progress, any challenges you face, and any adjustments needed to the routine.
  6. Comfort and Coordination: Practice in your wedding attire and shoes to ensure you’re comfortable and can move freely. This helps avoid any surprises on the day of the performance.
  7. Transitions: Ensure smooth transitions between different parts of the dance. This helps maintain the flow and makes the performance look seamless.

The tradition of wedding dance lessons has evolved significantly over time, reflecting changes in cultural practices and societal norms.

Ancient Beginnings

The concept of dancing as part of wedding celebrations dates back to ancient civilizations. In Ancient Greece, newlywed couples would dance together to honour the deities and seek blessings for their union. Similarly in medieval Europe, the bride and groom would partake in a formal wedding dance to mark the beginning of their life together.

The Waltz Era

The 17th century saw the emergence of the waltz, which brought a significant shift to the first dance. This elegant dance form, characterized by graceful movements and couples in an embrace, quickly gained popularity among European aristocracy.  It became a symbol of refinement and sophistication, making it the dance of choice for many newlyweds.

Influence of Hollywood and Pop Culture

The 20th century witnessed a transformation in the first dance, largely influenced by Hollywood films and popular music. Iconic movie scenes featuring dazzling dance routines and the rise of dance-focussed musical genres, such as swing and jazz, brough a sense of glamour and excitement to wedding celebrations. Couples sought to emulate the elegance and charm of their favourite film stars, making their first dance an extravagant affair.

Modern Personalization

In recent decades, the concept of the first dance has expanded to embrace personalization and self-expression. Couples are no longer confined to traditional dance styles but are encouraged to choose music and movements that reflect their unique personalities and love story. This shift has led to the increasing popularity of First Dance/Wedding dance lessons/tuition where professionals help couples create a customised dance that tells their own narrative.

The Importance of First Dance Lessons

First dance lessons have become an invaluable resource for couples who want to make their first dance unforgettable. These lessons provide guidance, choreography and a supportive environment for couples to learn dance techniques and create a dance routine tailored to their skill level and preferences. Whether its is a Waltz, Foxtrot, Salsa, Boogie Woogie, East Coast Swing, Disco, comedy, theatrical, street dance, First Dance/Wedding Dance lessons and tuition empower couples to confidently take to the dance floor on their big day, wedding reception day, civil union day.
